Today, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin TD, and Minister of
State for Sport & the Gaeltacht, Jack Chambers TD, announced the allocation of €5,804,828 in
funding for the COVID-19 Supplementary Grant Scheme.
In November, an unprecedented €85 million funding package was announced for the Irish sport sector,
which has been significantly impacted by the various Covid-19 restrictions imposed since March 2020.
€5.8 million of that funding was ring-fenced to address any additional and immediate needs that may
arise in the sector as a result of the recent Level 5 restrictions.
In Clare, we have already administered in the past 3 weeks just under €50,000 to 55 sports clubs to help with the costs associated of keeping open and returning to Sport during these times. 22 clubs remain to be paid bringing the total support to just over €70,000. This additional €25,000 will go towards further return to sport initiatives. These will be announced in the early 2021.
Speaking about today’s announcement, John Sweeney, coordinator and CEO of Clare LSP said:
‘We are delighted with today’s announcement as we are fully aware of the pressures that sports clubs and organisations are under at present due to the pandemic. In 2021, we plan to further support the many clubs, especially those that cater for minority sports / groups, that are the vital mechanism by which so many people need to remain physically active.’
